We all know these large companies that produce the most popular item in a variety of different markets, like Kohler or Whirlpool. What isn’t well known is that some of those companies are taking steps towards more sustainable production processes, or are embracing charitable initiatives. The road to true sustainability is long and complex but even the longest journey starts with a single step.
Formica: some of Formica’s product qualify towards sustainable programs like LEED, GreenGuard and FSC. They also release a good amount of information about their product ratings and safety, that you can also look for here at NSF. Overall, Formica is taking action towards a more sustainable product mainly through recycling,
Whirlpool: this company is committing to become a net-zero through reducing emissions, waste and switching to renewable energy sources. It also has a whole website dedicated to helpful suggestions and tips to make your kitchen and home more sustainable. Considering how popular and successful is Whirlpool I find it extremely important for them to set an example and move forward in changing how they invest into new and sustainable initiatives and production systems. Whirlpool also partners with Habitat for Humanity in helping families live more efficiently and sustainably. A combination of data and funds that supports Habitat for Humanity’ programs and helps advance “Cost of Home” advocacy campaign.
Kohler: this company aims to become a net-zero emission 1 and 2 through renewable energy sources, and net-zero landfill waste globally. They also have an initiative regarding water preservation, and want to establish themselves as the most environmentally friendly company in their industry. There is more to Kohler’s path to sustainability and you can find more information here.
B Corp certification: this is not a company in particular but a certification that can quickly identify a pretty amazing company. Becoming a B Corporation requires the company to excel in every aspect of sustainability: environmental and social. The company must also agree to release publicly all the information related to the certification. There are not many furniture, fixtures or equipment companies that are certified, but more and more of these companies join the movement everyday. Savvy Rest and Avocado Green Mattress are both American mattress manufacturers and they are both certified. If you would like to look for a B Corp in particular, here is the search engine directly on the certification website.
